How to E-file 1099–NEC Forms with the IRS FIRE Using W2 Mate Software®

What you need in order to follow this tutorial and file 1099-NECs electronically:

1 Inside W2 Mate, navigate to the 1099-NEC electronic filing screen by selecting "E-filling > 1099-NEC Forms > Federal". Please ensure all information is accurate and then select the output folder. Click OK to create the e-file submission file. Once you get the success screen, click "Copy File Path to Clipboard" or write down the output file path.
2 Navigate to the "IRS FIRE Home" website (https://fire.irs.gov/) and login.
3 Under "Menu Options", select "Main Menu" and then click on "Send Information Returns".
4 Enter your TCC and TIN/EIN. Once that is submitted, please review or enter your company information.
5 To file for this company, please follow the steps below:

  • Navigate to the "Original File" tab; then enter and submit your PIN.
  • Click on "Choose File" then either paste the accurate file path that was previously copied or navigate to the file path. Then click on "Open."
  • Please ensure that the correct file name you selected is shown and click "Upload."
Congratulations, your upload is complete! The page that will appear displays information you may need later! We recommend printing the screen.
6 To check file status, please follow the steps below:

  • Select "Main Menu" and then "Check File Status" from the left-side menu of the page.
  • Enter the information that you used when creating the file. Once you have filled that out, select "Search" to see the status of your file.

1 Start by navigating to the "E-filling" tab inside W2 Mate and then select "1099-NEC Forms". Next, select "Federal (for upload to IRS FIRE System)".

2 Now W2 Mate will load the Electronic filing Transmitter Setup. Please ensure that the correct data is entered for each of the boxes. Then select your output folder, which is the location your created file will be saved, by clicking on "Browse". Select "OK" when finished.

3 W2 Mate will show a success message. You will need to write down the file path or you can click on "Copy File Path to Clipboard". To see a list of recipients, please select "click here". Once you receive the confirmation that the file path is copied, select "NO". Please note that you will not receive this page if W2 Mate notices an error. Please view the error report and make corrections. You will have to restart the process.

Now navigate to the "IRS & SSA Instructions" tab at the top. Then, select "Go to IRS FIRE System Website (1099 Electronic Filing)".

Please click on "Log On", located on the left-side menu of the page.

Now enter your FIRE System Logon information. Once you have entered your information, select "Login".

After logging into the IRS FIRE System, select "Main Menu", located on the left-side of the page.

Then from the Main Menu, click on "Send Information Returns".

Please enter your TCC and TIN/EIN for filling information return. Once that is entered, select "Submit".

Then review or enter your accurate company information and select "Accept".

To file for this company, please follow the steps below:

  • Select "Original File", located on the left-side of the page.

    Select 'Original File'
  • Next, enter your PIN and click "Submit".

  • Then click "Choose File."

  • Paste the file path that you previously copied into "File name" (please ensure it is the correct file) or navigate to the path you have written down. Then click on "Open".

  • Once the file has been chosen, click "Upload". Please make sure that the name of the file you selected is shown to the right of the "Choose File" button. If not, please repeat the two previous steps.

To check file status, please follow the steps below:

  • Select "Main Menu", located in the left-side menu of the page.

  • From the Main Menu, select "Check File Status" from the left-side menu of the page.

  • Lastly, you will need to enter the information that you used when creating the file. Once you have filled that out, select "Search" to see the status of your file.
