How to Fix Incorrect State or Local Wages on a W-2
Errors in state or local wage and tax reporting must be corrected to ensure the employee's state tax return is accurate. While a W-2c is used, it does not need to be filed with the SSA unless a federal correction is also made. The corrected form should be submitted to the relevant state or local tax agency.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open W2Correction Mate and either create a new company or open an existing one.
- Click on the W-2C Forms Tab and then click Add W-2C Form.
- Enter the employee details.
- In the "Correct information" column, enter the state.
- In the "Previously reported" columns, enter the incorrect state and local wage/tax information.
- In the "Correct information" columns, enter the correct state and local wage/tax information.
- Click Save.
- To print the employee's copy, select the W-2C Forms tab, select the employee from the list, click Print. In the dialog, select "Copy B—To Be Filed With Employee’s FEDERAL Tax Return".
- Do not file with the SSA unless a federal correction is also needed. Follow the specific e-filing or paper-filing instructions for the relevant state.
- Distribute the corrected form.
