Fixing Medicare Tax Withheld (Box 6) on Form W-2
A discrepancy in the amount of Medicare tax withheld (Box 6) can lead to tax reporting issues. To resolve this, a W-2c form must be filed to report the corrected amount. It's important to ensure the corrected tax amount in Box 6 aligns with the wages in Box 5.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open W2Correction Mate and either create a new company or open an existing one.
- Click on the W-2C Forms Tab and then click Add W-2C Form.
- Enter the employee details.
- In the "Previously reported" column, enter the incorrect tax amount from Box 6.
- In the "Correct information" column, enter the correct tax amount in Box 6.
- The software will not auto-calculate Box 5. The employer must manually ensure Box 5 corresponds to the new Box 6.
