2024 W2 Corrections: Print and E-File 2024 W-2C Tax Forms

In August 2024, the Social Security Administration (SSA) released updated specifications for both paper forms and electronic filing formats for Forms W-2C and W-3C to address 2024 W-2 corrections for the coming 2025 tax season. These updates have been incorporated into W2Correction Mate® 2024, our SSA-approved software designed for businesses of all sizes and tax professionals. Changes to Form 2024 W-3c

Key Updates

  • Changed OMB No. from 1545-0008 to 1545-0029 in the “For Official Use Only” box
  • Added the word “Total” to box d
  • Minor grammatical changes
  • Updated Purpose of Form section to bold, Form(s) W-2c
  • Updated E-Filing section to add phrase: “See the General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 for e-filing requirements for Forms W-2c and W-3c”

2024 EFW2C Updates (E-Filing Specification of W-2c Forms)

The RCO (Employee Optional) Record and RCU (Total Optional) Record have been modified to include a new field for Box 12 Code II. This new field is designated for reporting Income from Exclusion Of Medicaid Waiver Payments (IEMWP-II).

Social Security Wage Base: The Social Security Wage Base has increased to $168,600 for the 2024 tax year.

Social Security Tax Withholding: Both employers and employees will continue to pay Social Security tax at a rate of 6.2% on wages up to the new wage base. This results in a maximum Social Security tax of $10,453.20 per employee for 2024.

Household Employee Threshold: The Social Security and Medicare coverage threshold for household wages has been set at $2,700 for 2024.

Additional Updates

  • Appendix J – 18.0 (Maximum Wage and Tax Table) has been updated to reflect the 2024 Social Security wage amount changes, including those for household wages.
  • Various editorial changes and clarifications have been made throughout the document to improve understanding and accuracy.

These updates ensure that the EFW2C format aligns with the latest tax regulations and Social Security Administration requirements for the 2024 tax year.

2024 Filing Reminders for W-2C Corrections

  1. Submit EFW2C files promptly after discovering errors.
  2. Provide Form W-2c to employees as soon as possible after identifying mistakes.
  3. Employers and Filers can begin uploading 2024 tax year files on December 9, 2024.
  4. SSA requires full SSNs; partial SSNs (xxx-xxx-1234) are not accepted.
  5. Use AccuWage Online to test correction files before submission.
  6. Electronic filing is mandatory for 10 or more Forms W-2c in a calendar year, unless the IRS grants a waiver.

Additional Important Information

  • The deadline for electronic filing of W-2 forms is January 31, 2025.
  • There’s no specific deadline for W-2c forms, but file as soon as errors are discovered.
  • AccuWage Online is accessible through Business Services Online (BSO) and helps check EFW2C files for format correctness.
  • For Illinois, W-2s must be submitted by January 31 of the year following the withholding year.
